What exactly is "the Twitter Elite", then? And what did they do to make whoever it is obsess about them so much?

I've never really understood who is classed at 'elite' on twitter. The only person I can think of is maybe @stephenfry. Maybe people with the little 'blue tick'. I don't think anyone who takes part in the 5urvey are members of a 'twitter elite' just people who use twitter

They're the ones who crowd-please for retweets and to gain followers, they are usually successful and quite funny to follow, but they won't interact with anyone outside of the 'elite' or less popular than them.

I thought the twitter 'elite' was those 'normal' i.e not famous or verified, people with thousands of followers. I'm not sure there's any particular quality that makes them elite.
It shouldn't really matter but I can see why it annoys people.
